One of the main goals of the Bonaire Maritime Heritage Foundation is to restore historically significant boats in the ABC Islands. During that process we include youth in the process that they learn time-honored boat building skills and traditions by working with adult shipwrights.

Our current project is restoring 'Stormvogel', the last of the sailing cargo ships from our region. The cutter-rigged sloop known locally as a balandra, was built on Bonaire in 1951 and hauled goods, people and animals between the islands for decades. Left to rot in a Curaçaoan backwater, Stormvogel was rescued by the foundation in 2014.
